Homer Fire Chief Mahlon Irish yesterday (October 20) mourned the line of duty death of firefighter Robert Bush, who passed away unexpectedly over the weekend after apparently falling ill at a fire training on Saturday (October 19).
According to Irish, Bush was feeling sick at the training and was given immediate medical attention by members of his own department.
He was then brought to a local hospital, where Irish said revival efforts continued but were unfortunately unsuccessful.
“This was one of the toughest days, not only for me, but the members who first handedly had to take care of the situation,” Irish said. “This is the worst case scenario in my mind when we have to render aid to one of our own. I cannot express how proud I am of our members who initiated treatment and we also thank all the other fire departments offering their sympathy and willingness to assist in any way needed.”
No more details have been released about the exact cause of Bush’s death.
Information on his memorial services will be posted once they become available.
