Charter bus engulfed by flames on Interstate 81 northbound (Broome County)

Four passengers were injured after a charter bus caught fire yesterday on Interstate 81-NB in Broome County.

The coach was traveling northbound from Long Island to Syracuse with a total of 42 people onboard.

One person had to be treated for burns at Wilson Hospital. Two were taken to Binghamton General for smoke inhalation and another was checked out on scene but did not wish to be brought anywhere.

Both northbound lanes of the interstate were shut down near exit 7 (Castle Creek) for a period of time.

State troopers initially responded just before 2 pm. The left lane was reopened around 3:45 pm and the scene was cleared around 6 pm.

Battling the flames were Chenango, Chenango Bridge and Whitney Point Fire Departments.

Various EMT crews also responded, including Broome Ambulance, Chenango Ambulance, Marathon Ambulance, Union Ambulance and Maine Ambulance.

NYSP Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit, DEC, DOT, Broome County Sheriff’s Deputies and Broome County Security also assisted at the scene.
