Chair of Cortland Landscape & Design Committee Says They Look to Plant More Trees Again in City – Announces Nearly 70 Trees to be Planted on Main Street

During the City of Cortland Common Council meeting on Tuesday, Chair of the City of Cortland Landscape & Design Committee, also known as the “Tree Commission” Mike Dexter spoke on the committee’s efforts on planting new trees within the City of Cortland.
Dexter said the Commission wasn’t able to get funding last year for the purchase of new trees to plant within the City, but added the City of Cortland was able to provide funding for the commission. Currently, Thoma Development is assisting in paperwork for grant applications and Dexter hopes they will receive funding this year.
He continued on saying the Tree Commission looks to plant another 30 trees next year within the City of Cortland and said with the City of Cortland being a Tree City USA, the designation does help when it comes to grant funding. Last year, about $40,000 was spent on new trees.
Residents interested in having a tree planted in their front yard by the commission will be able to apply for one shortly via the City website found HERE. There will be five different trees residents may choose from. For homes that would have wires overhead the newly planted trees, the commission makes the decision if they will plant there. Dexter said they could even earn $50 from Niagara Mohawk (National Grid), if they approve the type of tree being planted under their wires.
With newly planted trees, Dexter then went on to stress the importance of watering newly planted trees and even trees that were planted last year. He also asked residents to not do volcano mulching around the base of the tree saying it can end up killing the tree.
Lastly, Mr. Dexter gave a confirmation that trees would return along Main Street within the City of Cortland, saying 67 trees will be planted. The tree planting will be the very last phase of the Main Street reconstruction project and noted the areas where the trees will be planted are being built right now.
