Centro Begins Service in Cortland County Today – Free Fares For All Today
The Central New York Regional Transportation Authority, better known as Centro, has officially begun transportation service for Cortland County starting today. Today (March 31st) will also be Free Fare Day as part of the celebration where residents may ride for free until 6pm this evening. The buses will be low-level and curb height and light blue in color, according to Homer Mayor Clune.
Centro has provided all information on available routes on their website, Centro.org. In total, there will be 7 routes offered by Centro. For Routes 1 through 6 full fare prices will be $1 with a monthly pass available at $40. Centro will offer half fares for Seniors 65 years old or older, those with disabilities and children ages 6 to 9 of .50 cents. Children under 6 may ride for free, but must be accompanied by an adult. The half fare monthly price is $20.
Route 7 will be a route between Cortland to Cornell University. This fare will cost $3 with a monthly specialized Route 7 pass at $85. Route 7 will also offer half fares of $1.50 as Routes 1-6. Centro plans to continue the routes previously served by First Transit while collecting data; Centro is likely to add and update routes depending on demand. They will eventually implement physical bus stop locations along routes; currently if you want to ride, you wave your arm to the upcoming bus on the actual route.
