Centro Awarded Over $9.2 Million Towards Low & No-Emission Buses
New York State Senators Kirsten Gillibrand and Chuck Schumer announced over $100 million in federal funding for new low and no-emission buses to transit authorities across the state. The Central New York Regional Transportation Authority, better known as Centro, was awarded $9,280,000 in federal funding.
“As New York continues to build cleaner, more reliable transportation systems, I’m proud to deliver this critical federal funding,” said Senator Gillibrand. “These investments will modernize bus fleets, improve service for riders, and help reduce emissions in communities across the state. I’ll keep fighting to make sure our transit agencies have the resources they need to serve New Yorkers safely and sustainably.”
The funding will go towards modernizing bus fleets and expand low and no-emission transportation. Senator Gillibrand & Schumer says the funding was made possible by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
Centro tells X101 News the money will be used to purchase BRT buses for Syracuse with between 11 and 12 buses to be purchased. Centro added at this time, they will be investing in low-emission vehicles for their fleet. However, they are looking at no emission vehicles for smaller buses and support vehicles.
“Thanks to our Bipartisan Infrastructure & Jobs Law, investment is flowing to purchase clean, new buses and improve bus services across New York. From purchasing new low-pollution, hybrid buses in Albany to helping create a faster, smoother commute for downtown Syracuse, this over $100 million in federal funding will help deliver the better, more modern, and cleaner transit services New Yorkers deserve,” said Senator Schumer. “This funding will keep the wheels of our local economies rolling, reduce emissions, and put New Yorkers on the road to a brighter future.”
