Julie Niederhofer is a Registered Nurse at Cayuga Medical Center, who recently joined a team of others on a medical mission helping fight COVID-19 on the front lines of New York City.
On April 8, two buses filled with health care staff from the Ithaca hospital embarked on their journey to the U.S. epicenter of the virus. New York City currently has the highest infection rates so far with more than 184k confirmed cases so far, with just under 50k hospitalized and over 15,000 confirmed deaths.
Niederhofer – who’s also Bariatric Coordinator at Cayuga Med and currently working at the sampling center outside the Shops at Ithaca Mall- said her NYC experience is one she will never forget.
“This was something that none of us were prepared for,” Niederhofer said. “Before this, I wasn’t trained as an ICU nurse. That was something I had to learn fast and then it turned into just trying to help out wherever I can to keep as many people alive as possible.”
Despite the intense circumstances, Niederhofer says she found a silver lining in the new “family” members she gained during her experience at NY Presbyterian, along with the gratitude and hospitality from residents of NYC during her month-long operation.
