A report from the Lown Institute shows Cayuga Health has spent more on both financial assistance and community investment than the estimated value of its tax exemption for 2021. The Lown Institute is a nonpartisan healthcare think tank.

The Lown Institute has given Cayuga Health what they call a “fair share” surplus. Cayuga Health says they have provided an estimated $37 million dollars in assistance and investment in the communities it serves. The institute also recognized the organization for their commitment in investing in community health; Cayuga Health received a 5-star rating for their investments.

“It is our mission to improve the well-being of the communities we serve,” said Dr. Martin Stallone, CEO for Cayuga Health. “We are proud to be recognized by Lown for this measure of community assistance and investment again this year. It underscores our commitment to our patients and partner organizations across the region.”

In a release, Cayuga Health says in exchange for providing free and/or discounted care and programs which address community health needs, nonprofit hospitals are exempt from paying most federal, state, and local taxes. Programs that address community health needs can include: substance abuse treatment, affordable housing, primary care clinics, and mental healthcare services.

“Hospitals increasingly recognize the importance of going beyond their walls to improve community health,” said Vikas Saini, MD, president of the Lown Institute. “These hospitals are leading the way in essential community health investments.”

The study conducted by Lown showed a majority of hospitals failed to meet their obligations as nonprofit entities. Overall, US hospitals with fair share surpluses, have invested over $4 billion dollars in excess of their tax breaks for 2021.

Cayuga Health is part of just 20% of nonprofit hospitals throughout the country to have this type of surplus.
