US Senator Kirsten Gillibrand has asked the US Government Accountability Office for a review of the federal milk pricing system.
The request comes as the current structure is leaving many of New York’s small and mid-sized farmers at risk of inadequate pay. This action is a follow up to Gillibrand’s Dairy Pricing Opportunity Act, which would pave the way for reforming and modernizing federal milk pricing.
“Volatile milk pricing and industry consolidation, among other factors, have left thousands of family farmers with no choice but to leave the dairy industry entirely. It’s time for comprehensive reform”, says Sen. Gillibrand.
New York’s the fifth largest dairy-producing state in the nation and home to nearly 3,500 dairy farms.
