In New York State’s effort to combat climate change, one of the proposals in this year’s state budget is to ban new gas appliances, including furnaces and ovens, beginning in 2026.
The new law for the state would require buildings to be all electric, moving away from natural gas and other fossil fuels. The move would increase the use of heating pumps and induction stoves for heating and cooking.
The ban would not affect properties that already have gas appliances installed and some advocate the ban would not help reduce the state’s goal at reducing greenhouse gas emissions in existing buildings.
