The Burger King on Route 222 in Cortland looks to have major renovations in its future. Plans submitted during the Town of Cortlandville’s Planning Board meeting last night show a redesign of the restaurant, kitchen, and double drive-thru lanes for the restaurant.

Plans for the renovation were submitted by Carroll’s LLC, the franchise owner of the Cortland Burger King. Carolls was purchased by Restaurant Brands International back in January of this year. That purchase indicated RBI would renovate all 600 Burger Kings owned by Carrols rapidly, including the Cortland location. The Cortland location is considered one of the franchises highest trafficked restaurants and was a high priority for renovations, which were noted to be years in the making.

Interior plans show a new dining room layout, a drink bar, new order counter, renovated kitchen and bathrooms. Exterior renderings show the current modern design for Burger King locations with the throwback logo and famous phrase “Home of the Whopper” located next to the main entrance to the restaurant.

The most noticeable change for patrons will most likely be the enlargement of the drive-thru. Plans call for a double drive-thru order lane with a pay window and order pickup window. The expansion will aid in speeding up the constant queuing, which impedes traffic within the plaza.

The required work for the restaurant requires a Lot Line, Aquifer, and Site Plan approval by the Planning Board. The lot line adjustment would be for the property Burger King sits on and The Chapel, an organization located at the shopping plaza. Burger King would acquire a small portion of the property to expand the drive-thru lanes.

Overall, opinions on the planned renovation were positive, no major structural changes for the building are planned. A complete rendering of the building with a color pallet will be included in the next meeting.

With no further comments, the board voted unanimously to send the plans to the county for review and recommendations.
