An attempted traffic stop in Broome County turned fatal yesterday (January 28) evening, after a highway shootout with Police left one suspect dead.
State Police say they observed a vehicle just past 6:20 yesterday evening that was wanted in connection with an unauthorized use of a motor vehicle complaint.
As the Trooper attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver took off and later stopped on State Route 17 eastbound in the town of Kirkwood, opening fire on and exchanging gunfire with the Trooper.
During the encounter, State Police say the suspect was shot twice and sustained wounds that were ultimately fatal.
The Trooper was transported to Wilson Memorial Hospital for treatment of non life-threatening injuries.
Identification of the suspect is pending family notification.
