Back on March 2nd of this year, the Cortland County Sheriff’s Office began an investigation of a fraud complaint that came into the office.
Through the investigation, investigators were able to determine 36 year old Joseph S. Carpenter of Binghamton, was in possession of a stolen, forged check that belonged to a local business. Carpenter then cashed the forged check at an undisclosed bank in the Town of Cortlandville.
A warrant was issued for Carpenter’s arrest by the Sheriff’s Office and was taken into custody on Friday, July 7th. Officers charged him with Grand Larceny in the 3rd, and Criminal Possession of a Forged Instrument in the 2nd, both Felonies.
Carpenter was taken to the Sheriff’s Office for processing and then arraigned through the centralized arraignment process. Due to state bail reform, he was released on his own recognizance.
He is due to appear in Cortlandville Town Court tomorrow.
