Local police join Memorial Day crackdown

Local News

Law enforcement across Cortland County will be out in force this Memorial Day weekend for a statewide crackdown on impaired driving, which runs Friday until Tuesday.

The holiday is typically considered one of the busiest times to travel and marks the official start to Summer.

Last year saw the second-highest travel volume on record at 43 million Americans, but Triple-A predicts a much different trend this year.

The agency won’t issue a Memorial Day travel forecast for the first time in two decades, with COVID-19 undermining the accuracy of the economic data used to create it.

Regardless, Sheriff Helms says area police will be on high-alert this weekend.

The STOP-DWI Memorial Day Weekend Crackdown is one of the many statewide enforcement initiatives promoted by STOP-DWI NY and the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee.

Highly visible, highly publicized efforts like the STOP-DWI Crackdown Campaign aim to further reduce the incidence of drunk and impaired driving.
