Area Fire Departments Knockout Mulch Fire Twice Within 24 hrs

On Sunday morning around 9am, a passerby of Paul Bunyan Products in Preble called into Cortland County 9-1-1 to report smoke coming from one of the piles of mulch at the business.

Preble Fire responded to the business and found a small fire underneath the pile. Firefighters were able to contain the fire to a small area of a mulch. Homer Fire was originally called for mutual aid, but was canceled as the fire was under control by Preble Fire.

Early Monday morning, firefighters from the Preble Fire Department returned to Paul Bunyan Products for another mulch fire reported by a worker. Tully Fire additionally responded to the scene for mutual assistance. Both fire departments worked to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading, Tully Fire & EMS said in a release. Units were cleared from the scene around 5:30 in the morning.
