Around 4am today, April 28th, the Freeville Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire with entrapment on Railroad Street within the Village of Freeville.
Arriving firefighters found the building, a multi unit apartment on fire with the brunt of the flames coming from the second floor in the rear of the building. Firefighters immediately attempted to search the building for anyone inside, but due to the extreme heat, smoke and flames, could not.
One person was pronounced dead on scene with another resident transported to a hospital in Syracuse with non-life threatening injuries. The other occupants of the building were able to escape.
Additional departments responded to the scene to assist Freeville including Dryden, Groton, Etna, Lansing, McLean, Varna, and Ithaca Airport Fire Departments. Dryden and Groton Ambulance also responded. Firefighters were on scene for several hours battling the flames. All units were back in service around 2pm Friday.
Assistance was also provided by Cayuga Heights for coverage with Harford and Cortlandville Fire Departments responding to the scene on Railroad Street. Virgil Fire Department provided coverage for Dryden Fire District, and Homer Fire Department for McLean’s.
The identity of the deceased has not been released and the fire remains under investigation by NYS OFPC and Tompkins County Sheriff’s Department. Dryden Police also provided assistance on scene.
