Another Vacant & Unsafe Building Torn Down in City of Cortland
Another vacant and unsafe building in the City of Cortland, has been torn down. The house located at 21-23 Grant Street in the city was torn down by Contento Demolition after a recent monthly inspection of the building deemed it to be unsafe and must be taken down.
Captain Roy Everett from the City of Cortland Codes Office told X101 News the City of Cortland and property owner, Steve Muka, came into an agreement to tear the building down. Captain Everett says the building itself was found to be in further decline during the required monthly visit by the Cortland Fire Department. He says the monthly inspection is required by a local ordinance and is done as part of the City of Cortland’s code enforcement efforts.

Demolition on the property took place Tuesday morning, March 4th. Captain Everett noted the city is working with Mr. Muka on the demolition of another unsafe structure located on Grange Place.
The City of Cortland has been continuously working on either the removal or rehabilitation of several vacant properties. In July of last year, the city tore down a long vacant house at 186 Madison Street and the following month ordered the demolition of the house at 169-171 Groton Ave. However, the house on Groton Ave. was saved and renovated after the property owner paid the city back taxes and sold the property to a new owner who renovated the property completely.
