Another Scam Warning Issued by Sheriff’s Department

The Cortland County Sheriff’s Department is once again warning residents of another type of scam that has become more popular. The scam, phishing emails, which are made to look very close to original emails that are sent by the actual company the scammer is trying to impersonate.

A big key to detect what may be a phishing scam is looking at the original email address it was sent from. The address usually will be slightly different, have spelling errors, or use numbers in replacement of letters.

The fake emails overall will have the same backgrounds and logos as the legitimate emails, but spelling errors are usually commonly found. The phishing emails will inform the potential victim that there is an overdue balance that must be paid and requests personal information. The scam would include a link that it will request the victim to click on to “pay off” their balance owed.

The Sheriff’s Department says these emails are scams. The best way to avoid being a victim of these phishing scams is to not click on anything within the email and to delete it.
