Annual St. Baldrick’s Fundraiser is Tomorrow at Red Jug Pub in Cortland
The atmosphere at Red Jug Pub on Central Avenue is about to get a lot lighter—literally. As of Friday morning, the community has already rallied to raise over $31,000 for their annual St. Baldrick’s Foundation fundraiser. However, the finish line is still ahead: organizers have set an ambitious goal of $55,000 for the main event tomorrow, Saturday, March 14.
Why the Shave?
While the sight of falling hair and bared scalps makes for a lively afternoon, the mission behind the buzz is deeply serious. The St. Baldrick’s Foundation is the largest private funder of childhood cancer research grants in the world.
The “shave-off” tradition started in 2000 as a way to stand in solidarity with children who often lose their hair during treatment. Since then, it has evolved into a global movement, funded by volunteers who trade their tresses for donations that fuel life-saving clinical trials.
A Cortland Tradition
This year marks a major milestone for local organizer and Red Jug Pub owner Tom Terwilliger, who is stepping into his 13th year of hosting the event. Under his leadership, the pub has become a local hub for the cause, transforming a neighborhood favorite into a powerhouse for pediatric cancer research.
