AAA – Gas Prices Continue Steady Increase

Gas prices continue to rise both statewide and nationally, according to AAA. Nationally, the price for a gallon of gas increased by 6 cents per gallon in the past week to an average of $3.53. The average for New York is now $3.43 a gallon, also up 6 cents from a week ago.

AAA says even with a “lackluster” demand for gas, oil prices continue to rise leading to the increased cost at the pump.

“Gas prices are a lot like seasonal temperatures, rising with the arrival of spring. The demand for gasoline increasing during spring break also pushes pump prices higher. Administration (EIA) reveals gas demand increased slightly over the last week, following the end of spring break for many schools, while domestic supply has fallen.” AAA said in a release.

Another reason for prices increasing currently is the switch to the most expensive to produce summer blend gas. AAA says the switch tends to up prices as much as 15 cents per gallon.

Prices for a gallon of gas in Cortland County remain slightly under the state average at $3.38 a gallon. Neighboring Tompkins County ticks just one cent lower for a county average of $3.37 a gallon.
