The travel forecast for the Independence Day holiday shows 70.9 million people are expected to travel at least 50 miles or more from their home. AAA says the organization reviewed the entire July 4th week, but also the Saturday before and Sunday after the holiday. The number of those traveling this year is a 5% increase from last year and an 8% increase from 2019.

“With summer vacations in full swing and the flexibility of remote work, more Americans are taking extended trips around Independence Day,” said Paula Twidale, Senior Vice President of AAA Travel. “We anticipate this July 4th week will be the busiest ever with an additional 5.7 million people traveling compared to 2019.”

Out of the 70.9 million traveling, AAA says just over 60.5 million will be traveling by car over the holiday, up 2.8 million from last year. Prior to the pandemic, in 2019, 55.3 million people traveled by car.

Thankfully with all those drivers, gas prices on average are lower than what they were last year. In New York State, the average stands at $3.53 a gallon. Last year in the state the average was at $3.69 a gallon.

It’s not only car travel that is showing a record number of travelers. Air travel is expected to see a record number of travelers with 5.74 million people choosing to fly, up 7% from last year. Airfare is reportedly cheaper this year for the Independence Day week with an average round trip domestic ticket costing $800.

AAA also says over 4.6 million people will travel through other means including buses, cruises, and trains.

For the best travel times for those traveling by car AAA says Monday shouldn’t be an issue, but Tuesday July 2nd, it’s recommended to leave in the evening and for Wednesday and Thursday, to leave before noon. From July 5th through the 7th, AAA encourages you to leave before 10am to avoid traffic.
