With the arrival of colder weather, many homeowners may be signing contracts for snow removal or other cold weather related repairs.
The State Attorney General’s Office is urging residents particularly elderly property owners to beware of scams.
Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman says consumers should protect themselves when hiring contractors to perform any services.
Property owners are advised to shop around and get at least three estimates from reputable contractors that include specific materials and services to be provided for the job.
Never pay full price up front and get references.
Also, do not provide any personal information over the phone to companies that may be offering options for home heating fuel suppliers.
