Heart’s Ann Wilson On The Road With Her Solo ‘Thing’

Music News

Heart’s Ann Wilson is out on the road with her solo band, The Ann Wilson Thing, performing a high-octane set of personal favorites — but no Heart songs. Four of the songs appear on Wilson’s new EP, The Ann Wilson Thing! #1: Buffalo Springfield’s “For What It’s Worth,” the Mannish Boys’ “Fool No More,” Aretha Franklin’s “Ain’t No Way,” and Ray Charles’ “The Danger Zone.”

During the show, Wilson stretched out with renditions of the Animals’ “We Gotta Get Out Of This Place,” Screamin’ Jay Hawkins’ “I Put a Spell On You,” Neil Young’s “War Of Man,” John Lennon’s “Isolation,” Bob Dylan’s “Every Grain Of Sand,” Peter Gabriel & Kate Bush’s “Don’t Give Up,” the Jimi Hendrix Experience’s “Manic Depression,” and Ike & Tina Turner’s “River Deep, Mountain High,” among others.

Heart has been busy prepping its latest album for an early-2016 release. The collection was actually nearly completely recorded during soundchecks over the course of the band’s 2015 tour dates. We asked Ann Wilson what shape the new album has taken and she explained the at she and sister Nancy Wilson managed to break some new musical ground on the still-unnamed set: “It’s sounding very multi-dimensional; just real different from stuff we’ve done before. Some of it’s intensely soulful. One of the songs has a crazy (musical) departure that it goes off on. One of them is really spiritual — not in a Christian sense, just in a human spiritual sense. We’re not in a box on this new record, for sure. But, if after nearly 40 years, if you’re still in the box — you better think about how to get out of it (laughs)!”
