Public Officials Warn About Dangers of Cliff Jumping And Swimming in Ithaca

Tompkins County Sheriff’s Deputies and public safety officials are reminding the public about the ban on swimming and cliff jumping in the gorges around Ithaca.

In what has become an all too familiar story police announced the drowning death of a 20-year-old Cortland County man Sunday.

20-year-old Eric Richardson of Virgil was swimming with a group of friends Sunday at a reservoir known as Second dam on Six Mile Creek in the Town of Ithaca.

Police say Richardson jumped into the water from a high ledge on the south side of the dam and failed to resurface. After several attempts, bystanders pulled him from the water and attempted CPR but were unable to revive him.

There is a swimming ban in effect in he area where Richardson died. On Sunday, police say about 300 people had gathered at the dam.
