The Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a drowning that occurred Sunday.
Around 6 PM Sunday evening deputies responded to the Second Dam area located in the Town of Ithaca for an apparent drowning.
Upon their arrival deputies were advised that a man in his early twenties jumped into the water south of the dam and failed to immediately return to the surface.
The Tompkins County Sherriff’s Office has identified the victim as 20-year-old Erik Richardson of Virgil.
Bystanders in the area entered the water several times and were eventually able to find him.
Richardson was unconscious when he was pulled from the water. CPR was attempted but was unsuccessful.
The Ithaca Police Department, Ithaca Fire Department, and Bangs Ambulance also responded.
