A pedestrian had to be airlifted to a nearby trauma center on Tuesday (January 14), after being hit while crossing Mitchell Street by a senior driver in the town of Ithaca.
Deputies with the Tompkins County Sheriff’s Department responded to the scene just past 5 p.m.
Their investigation determined the driver of the vehicle to be 85-year-old Marguerite Layton, of Ithaca, who was traveling east on Mitchell Street when she failed to stop for the pedestrian who was moving southward legally in the crosswalk.
Layton wasn’t injured in the crash, but was subsequently charged with a violation for failing to yield the right of way to a pedestrian.
The condition of the person who was hurt is unknown at this time.
Assisting deputies were members of New York State Police, the Ithaca Fire Department and Bangs Ambulance.
