This morning’s (January 11) Meet Cortland County segment featured Kathy & Dale Taylor, who together teach the local edition of the “Family to Family” program run through the National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI).
Family to Family is a free 12-week, psychoeducational program for family, significant others and friends of people living with mental illness, taught by trained families of individuals living with a serious mental illness themselves.
The model emphasizes education, support, self-care and problem solving.
Family to Family is taught by trained peer family members who have participated in the program and been certified as trainers.
Class curriculum includes presentations, discussion and interactive exercises.
Kathy and Dale already teach the class through the NAMI Finger Lakes’ Ithaca office and will now run a class in Cortland at the Access to Independence building located at 26 North Main Street.
There are still eight more spots to fill before the class begins on January 25, running every Saturday from 10a – 1p until April 11.
