Destiny USA Mall Sees Shooting and Unrelated Stabbing in 24 Hours

Local News

A reported shooting inside Syracuse’s Destiny USA mall on Black Friday night made national news headlines and forced the panicked exit of thousands of shoppers.

Authorities say the incident happened near the food court around 7 p.m. and was not a case of random violence, but rather the culmination of a prior altercation.

Twenty-one-year-old Kyree Truax has since been arrested as the shooter, and one 20-year-old male victim was brought to a nearby hospital for treatment of multiple gunshot wounds in the leg.

Syracuse police were able to identify and apprehend Truax after he was involved in a traffic incident immediately following the incident.

He’s now charged with second-degree assault, second-degree criminal possession of a weapon and first-degree reckless endangerment, according to Syracuse Police Chief Kenton Buckner.

The mall was temporarily closed down while police investigated that scene but was reopened on Saturday morning.

In a separate incident, Syracuse Police say there was also a stabbing at the mall just before 10 p.m. Saturday at Apex Entertainment.

No suspects or victims have yet been identified, but officials say nearby surveillance video captured two males fighting, both of which were armed with a knife. Police say one of the males cut the other before bystanders broke up the fight and prompted them both to flee.

As with the first incident, authorities believe this to be an isolated incident.

Anyone with information is asked to call Syracuse Police.
