The Homer Town Hall will host an open house on Tuesday (November 5) for anyone interested in touring the newly-renovated office space, located on the main floor of a more than 100-year-old building.

Originally constructed in 1908 as a public auditorium, the building was retrofitted in 1938 as the Capitol Movie Theater.

A second renovation in the 1970’s created its first office space, but an aesthetic downside of that change was that it effectively hid the former stage from common sight.

The latest renovations were completed in May, with two brand-new front offices in place for use by the Town and Village of Homer municipalities.

Homer Village Clerk Dan Egnor was featured on a May edition of Happening in Homer on WXHC, in which he spoke in detail about the various upgrades and expansions that took place. (Listen to that interview here)

In September, Senator James Seward visited the building to announce a $200K capital grant he secured to help fund the project, which came through the State and Municipal Facilities Program.

The money was applied towards a total project price tag of around $650K.

With the new and expanded layout comes the added benefit of again featuring the original auditorium and stage, which are now visible for the first time since 1970.

The Assessor’s Office occupies the former stage, while a center hallway divides the Town and Village offices on the main floor.

Town and Village officials encourage all Homer residents and members of the greater community to stop by and see the rejuvenated history themselves at Tuesday’s open house, which will run from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Additionally, the Homer Clerk’s Office at the Town Hall will be open extra hours today (November 1) until 3:00 p.m. to allow hunters to purchase deer management permits for doe.

Those are available starting today on a first-come/first-serve basis at any DEC-authorized location.
