Common Council to Hear Presentation on Upcoming Changes at the County Landfill

Local News

In addition to budget discussion at tonight’s (October 15) Cortland Common Council meeting, city leaders will also get a presentation by County Recycling Coordinator Renee Parks on the scheduled changes that will take place at the facility, beginning January 1, 2020.

Parks was named the new recycling coordinator following plans approved by the legislature this past January (2019) to retake control of the facility from Casella Waste Management, a measure its considered for the past three years.

The decision came by way of a near-unanimous vote in December 2018, with the lone “nay” tally from Legislator Linda Jones, who has long expressed concerns about the fiscal implications behind the county running its own recycling center. More on the December 2018 decision here.

Supporters of the measure say it will help improve revenues in the long run and establish legal continuity with haulers.

Over the course of the past year, the legislature has spent just under $300K on equipment needed to run the facility, which was previously provided as part of the service from Casella.

Additionally, Parks and other officials have been out in the community educating the public on proper recycling techniques to both help the environment and improve the overall efficiency of the recycling program.

Tonight’s presentation is expected to give a good look on how the changes may look to the various municipalities.
