Carl E. Ryder, 74, of Cortland, passed away on October 7, 2019 at the Veterans Administration Hospital, Syracuse, N.Y. Carl was born in Cortland on January 20, 1945 and was an area resident his entire life.
Carl faithfully served his country in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam Conflict. He had retired from Carl’s Kwik Shake in Homer, a business he owned and operated for many years. He was a member of the American Legion, The Marine Corps League of Cortland County, Disabled American Veterans and the Veterans of Foreign Wars of The United States. While serving in the military he was awarded the National Service Defense Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, The Vietnam Campaign Medal and a Rifle Marksmanship Badge.
He is survived by his son; Robert Ryder of Hampton, New Hampshire; two daughters; Carina A. Ryder of Takoma Park, Maryland and Carla D. Ryder-Nelson of Rogers, Arkansas; three grandchildren; Aiden J. O’Connor, Isabella G. Nelson and Jackson Ryder. Carl was preceded in death by his wife Elaine A. Camillo Ryder in 1981.
Funeral services will be conducted on Friday at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of Riccardi Funeral Home, Cortland, N.Y. with Rev. Nathan Brooks officiating. Prayers of committal will follow in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery. The family will be present to receive friends on Thursday from 4-6 p.m. in the funeral home chapel 69 N. Main St. Cortland, N.Y. A reception will be held at the VFW Cortland at 1 p.m., following the funeral services on Friday.
The family has asked that contributions, in lieu of flowers, be directed to Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation Carl E. Ryder Memorial Scholarship Fund 230 E. Ohio St. Suite 500 Chicago, Illinois 60611.
