Vestal’s African Road Elementary School Receives Prestigious Blue Ribbon Award

Local News

A Broome County elementary school is one of 20 nationwide to receive the National Blue Ribbon Award from the U.S. Department of Education.

African Road Elementary School is one of five primary schools in the Vestal School District and serves a diverse population of just under 300 students, speaking 13 different native languages.

Rep. Anthony Brindisi announced the school’s Blue Ribbon on Friday (September 27).

“African Road Elementary is an exemplary school and deserves this prestigious award,” Brindisi said. “Our public schools are the backbone of our communities and this award is a testament to the hard work of the faculty, staff, and administrators. These awards serve as a reminder that the Southern Tier is a great place to raise a family. Vestal should be proud and go Golden Bears.”

The school’s mission is defined as providing a nurturing and supportive environment where all students respect themselves, understand the diversity of others, and develop a love of learning.

It now joins a distinct list of public & private elementary, middle, and high schools across the U.S., recognized since 1982 for their overall academic excellence or progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups.
