On today’s (Sep. 28) Meet Cortland County segment, Cortland Police Officers Jesse Abbott and Joe Peters stopped by the WXHC studios and spoke with Vinnie Bellardini about tomorrow’s “Back the Blue” 5K Run/Walk & subsequent Emergency Services Appreciation Day event at Beaudry Park.

Registration for the 5k begins 8am, with the “race” expected to start around 9. All runners & walkers are welcome to join in on this special fundraising event. (Register at cccops.com)

The 5k Foot Pursuit raises money for the many community police events/programs that Abbott & CPD host throughout the year like Coffee with a Cop, the Veterans’ Day Breakfast, community outreach program and more, including a special new program being added this Christmas.

Following the run is a unified emergency services softball tournament, which benefits the worldwide Special Olympics movement. Each team will feature both emergency service crews and Special Olympics athletes.

Games will be played throughout the morning on the softball fields next to the main Beaudry Parking lot.

Parking for the entire event will be in a nearby lot owned by CAPCO, located up Denti Way from Beaudry adjacent to the Cornerstone Church off South Main Street.

The day-long event runs 10am – 2pm and features “meet & greets” with local, state and even national guard personnel.

It also includes vehicle displays, equipment demonstrations, canine units, a delicious BBQ lunch and even a helicopter landing on the full-sized baseball field.
