Applications are now available for the 2020 Cortland County Tourism Marketing Grants, formally known as “occupancy tax allocation.” Eligible applicants include local tourism-related nonprofit organizations that market to non-county residents and bring in outside economic activity.
As per the local occupancy tax law, Cortland County collects a 5% tax per-room night on all overnight lodging stays inside its borders, which is then distributed annually to the local tourism-related nonprofit organizations, as well as the local municipalities at various predetermined rates.
According to CVB Executive Director Meghan Lawton, the intent of the occupancy tax allocation is to “enhance marketing funding for tourism and cultural activities for the benefit of Cortland County and to further support economic development as it relates to tourism.”
The marketing grant program specifically supports the various external marketing efforts (those outside of Cortland County) that stimulate increased overnight stays, increased tourism business and increased visitor spending in Cortland County.
Eligible applicants for the grant program include duly incorporated tourism-related 501(c)(3) organizations, as recognized by the Internal Revenue Service.
Applications can be requested in person at the CVB office at 37 Church St in Cortland, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday-Friday.
