Ithaca Police Make An Arrest After Armed Shoplifting Report

Local News

Ithaca Police arrested a Newark Valley man just past 7 p.m. Monday (September 9), following initial reports of an armed shoplifter at a store on the city’s southwest side.

Store personnel told police they were confronting 37-year-old Gregory Desamours after seeing him steal from them, when he displayed to them the handle of a gun he had tucked in his waistband

Desamours then ran off and fled in a black SUV, which police soon located between the Lowes and the Spring Buffet off South Meadow Street.

Inside the vehicle were Desamours and four other occupants, all of whom were ordered out and on the ground by K-9 units and Ithaca Officers with long guns drawn.

Found in Desamours’ possession was more than $150 in stolen property from the store, along with the weapon he showed employees, which turned out to be a BB gun. Another BB gun was also found in the vehicle.

He and another passenger also had active arrest warrants in other jurisdictions, both of whom were turned over to State Police for further prosecution.
