Local News

New Yorkers have officially selected a new license plate design, which was one of five possible choices and the only one to feature Upstate New York.

The new plates feature images of Niagara Falls, the Adirondack Mountains, the Statue of Liberty, the New York City skyline and a Long Island lighthouse. and the Statue of Liberty.

Along the bottom is the state’s official motto, excelsior,” which is Latin for “ever upward.”

They’ll begin rolling out in April.

Residents were given a chance to vote in an online contest from the five designs, and the winner was announced by the DMV on Friday (September 6), which received 49.7% of the 325,000 votes cast in the competition.

“The design overwhelmingly selected by New Yorkers showcases some of our most iconic symbols and truly represents what the Empire State is all about — our diversity, our unparalleled architecture and natural beauty, and our unyielding commitment to freedom and justice for all.” -DMV Commissioner Mark Schroeder

Of the five designs, the winner was the only one to feature reference to Upstate NY.

Three of the other four featured only the Statue of Liberty. The fourth also included the Gov. Mario M. Cuomo Bridge as a backdrop, which tied for last with 9.7% of the vote.

Governor Cuomo faces continued scrutiny for the requirement of drivers to buy new these license plates for $25, once their own reaches 10-years or older. That fee is expected to generate about $75 million over the next two years.

Lawmakers in both parties and officials with the DMV have indicated they may work together to reduce these fees, or make the program not mandatory, before the rollout in April.
