Cortland Woman Sentenced In 2013 Shooting On Main Street

Local News

(Shenessa Pittman, 32, of Cortland)

A Cortland woman was sentenced in Cortland County Court yesterday (September 5), following a June conviction on charges related to an August 2013 incident where she shot a man on Main Street.

Authorities say 32-year-old Shenessa Pittmann fired a .22 caliber handgun across Main Street from the porch of a multi-family dwelling unit, striking Jevar Sturridge once in the forearm. The incident happened August 31, 2013.

Witnesses saw Pittman flee the area in an SUV and was able to hide out in Virginia for about five years until she finally apprehended after a 2018 court appearance in Virginia.

Pittman was convicted on three different counts in June 2019 and yesterday received three concurrent sentences.

“This six year old case shows to our community the commitment of this office to seek justice when violent felonies are perpetrated upon our city streets,” said Cortland County District Attorney Patrick Perfetti. “Shootings on Cortland City Streets are an uncommon occurrence and today’s sentence sends a clear message that this conduct is unacceptable and will be met with considered punishment.”

Upon her conviction as a first-time violent felony offender, Pittman was sentenced to the following:

  • Count I (Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree): 10 years with 5 years Post-Release Supervision
  • Count II (Assault in the Second Degree): 7 years, with 3 years Post-Release Supervision
  • Count III (Reckless Endangerment in the First degree):  2 ⅔ to 7 years

These sentences will run concurrent to one another. At her sentencing yesterday, Pittman asserted that she would not apologize and was not remorseful.

D.A. Perfetti had requested the maximum sentence of 15 years, but says his office is “satisfied that the
sentenced imposed is a significant prison term and should serve as an appropriate deterrent.”
