Wegmans To Reduce In-Store Plastic By Two Million Pounds This Year

Local News

Continuing its commitment to environmental sustainability, Wegmans says it plans to reduce the use of plastic made from fossil fuels in its stores by 2 million pounds this year, with an ultimate goal of cutting 10 million pounds by 2024.

To achieve this number, the supermarket giant has primarily targeted packaging and single-use plastics.

Wegmans has already replaced all plastic straws and drink stirrers with renewable fiber alternatives, both in its stores and corporate locations across New York and Pennsylvania.

The company announced in April that it would eliminate plastic bag use in each of its New York locations ahead of the state ban, which takes effect on March 1, 2020.
