Vape-Related Lung Illness Cases Double In Just One Week In New York

Local News

In just one week, the amount of severe lung illness cases that have been linked to vaping or e-cigarette use has nearly doubled in New York.

The State Health Department said Friday (August 24) that it’s now looking into 21 potential cases, up from 11 the week before.

So far, none have been reported in Central NY. (Western New York: 10, Capital region: 4, Dutchess County: 4, Westchester County: 1, Long Island: 1, and New York City: 1).

To make matters worse, health officials in Illinois believe they have recorded the first-ever death in the U.S. from a vape-related lung disease.

Health officials now warn that anyone who uses vape products and develops respiratory issues should stop using them immediately and get checked out by a doctor. They’ve so far been unable to identify anything more specific in common among the cases other than their e-cigarette use.

The CDC says more than 150 cases have been reported in 15 states so far, primarily among teens and young adults.
