Homer Principal, Veteran Fireman Named To Trustee Board Of FASNY Firemen’s Home

Local News

Homer High School Principal and long-time volunteer fireman Douglas Van Etten was recently appointed to the Board of Trustees of the FASNY’s Firemen’s Home. The honor was announced at the 147th FASNY Annual Convention in Syracuse that took place last weekend (August 8-11).

Van Etten’s career totals three decades of firefighting experience, beginning in 1989 in the Greene County town of Lexington.

He later joined Cortlandville Fire and volunteered from 1994-2010, serving as President of the Department and Assistant Chief at different points along the way. He’s now been with the Homer Fire Department for nearly 10 years and is an active member of its West Side Hose Company #3.

This is Van Etten’s first time appointed as a Trustee member.

The FASNY Firemen’s Home is located in Hudson, NY, and started more than 125 years ago as a shelter for volunteer firefighters without a safe place to live. Over time, it’s evolved into a fully licensed residential health care facility, providing a home-like setting and personalized care to volunteer firefighters who served their communities, but can no longer care for themselves.

The Home is governed by the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) Board of Directors and guided by an appointed Board of Trustees.

It’s the only facility in the world exclusively dedicated to volunteer firefighters and, to date, has cared for more than 3,000 residents.
