Man Charged With DWI In Wrong-Way Accident With Injuries On I-81

Local News

Two men were injured and one arrested for DWI early Saturday (August 3) morning after a wrong-way crash on Interstate 81 near Exit 12 in Homer.

Troopers say 32-year-old Erik Williams, of Marathon, was traveling north in the southbound lane just before 2 a.m. when he crashed his 2008 Dodge Caravan head-on with an incoming tractor trailer (2018 Freightliner Cascadia).

The driver of the trailer was 56-year-old John Anderson, of Johnson City. Both he and Williams were treated at upstate for non life threatening injuries.

Traffic was diverted for about 5 hours so crews could clean up the nearly 50 gallons of diesel fuel that spilled into the road from the crash.

Williams was charged with Driving While Intoxicated and is scheduled to appear in the city of Cortland court on August 28.

Assisting State Police at the scene were members of the Cortland County Sheriff’s Office, Homer Police,  the DEC and the DOT.
