The Guthrie family of hospitals have each received a three-year accreditation in the field of Echocardiography, including Guthrie Cortland Medical Center. Echocardiography is used to assess different areas of the heart and can detect heart disease or signs of serious conditions.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, followed closely by stroke as the fourth highest cause of death.

According to the American Heart Association (AHA), more than 2,100 Americans die every day from cardiovascular disease, amounting to about one every 40 seconds.

The other Guthrie affiliates who also received the accreditation were Guthrie Corning Hospital, Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital, Guthrie Towanda Memorial Hospital, and Guthrie Medical Group Big Flats (Corning Centerway, Ithaca, Owego, Troy, and Vestal).

Guthrie officials say the latest accreditation demonstrates their ongoing commitment to providing quality patient care in echocardiography.
