State Police yesterday (June 10) charged a Tioga County man with first-degree murder in the death of his 8-month-old daughter on Sunday.
Troopers responded to a call just past 7:00 Sunday morning to check on the welfare of 8-month-old Ruby Franciscovich, who was reported missing and last seen with her father 25-year-old Cody Franciscovich, of Owego.
The two were seen at the Deep Well Motel on Route 17C in the town of Tioga, where they’d been living for several weeks with the child’s mother and two other children ages 2 and 4.
Police began their search and were soon called to a location just west of the motel on reports of a man who was wearing no clothing.
Officers arrived and located Cody Franciscovich, interviewing him until he directed them to a pond behind St. Patrick’s Cemetery on 17C where Ruby’s body was found, face-down about 25 feet off shore.
A trooper quickly waded out into the water and retrieved Ruby, beginning CPR while waiting for Owego Ambulance to arrive and transport her to Wilson Hospital in Johnson City, where she was pronounced deceased.
Franciscovich now sits in Tioga County Jail on no bail and the two other children are with other family members.
Child Protective Services is also actively involved in the case.
The investigation is on-going and Franciscovich is set to appear in Tioga court tomorrow (June 12).
