Governor Cuomo Announces He’ll Run For A Fourth Term In 2022

Local News

Governor Andrew Cuomo said yesterday (May 28) he plans to seek a fourth term in office in 2022. He made that announcement during a morning interview on WAMC radio.

If re-elected, Cuomo will become only the second ever to win a 4th four-year term as New York governor. The only other was Republican Nelson Rockefeller, who was elected a fourth time in 1970 and went on to become Vice President of the U.S. in 1974.

Cuomo’s father, the late Gov. Mario Cuomo, lost his bid for a fourth term in 1994.

New York’s first governor was also its longest serving. George Clinton served for seven three-year terms and also went on to be U.S. vice president back in 1805.

Cuomo won his third term last fall after defeating Republican Marc Molinaro. New York has no term limits for the office of governor.
