WWII Veteran and Cortland Legend Sam Forcucci Passes Away At 96

Local News

The Cortland community lost a very close friend over the weekend.

Not only was Dr. Sam Forcucci one of the thousands of fearless paratroopers who landed in Normandy, France on D-Day, he returned from war and spent the rest of his years dedicated to helping and teaching those right in his own backyard.

Over the decades, Forcucci served as Cortland mayor, taught many years as a professor at SUNY Cortland and spent time conducting everybody’s favorite Old Timers Band.

He was also heavily involved with St. Anthony’s Church and the St. Anthony’s Festival, even composing a special hymn for the parish’s 100th anniversary in 2017 (which was also the 50th anniversary of the Old Timers Band).

Those closest with Forcucci confirmed Saturday (April 27) morning that he had passed away the day before after 96 years packed with life.

Calling Hours will be Friday May 3 at 9 a.m. at Wright Beard Funeral Home, with funeral services to follow at 10.

In lieu of flowers, friends are requested to consider donations to St Anthony’s Church, Cortland Free Library and the Cortland Hospital Foundation.
