Brindisi Legislation To Help Expand Broadband Access In Rural Upstate NY

Local News

Congressman Anthony Brindisi (D-22) yesterday announced (April 10) that he was successful passing legislation that will help expand rural access to high-speed broadband in Upstate New York.

He was able to pass an amendment onto the Save the Internet Act of 2019, which was passed by the U.S. House Representatives in order to restore net neutrality rules.

““The free market is the cornerstone of America’s economy, and this bill would ensure that free market competition is protected on the internet.

However, for many Upstate New Yorkers, basic internet access remains out of reach. Internet access is essential in today’s economy, and we need to do more to connect rural areas to high-speed broadband.”

-Rep. Anthony Brindisi

This amendment will now direct the Government Accountability Office to issue a report about the ways in which the U.S. government can promote the build-out of high-speed broadband infrastructure, especially in rural and other unserved areas.

That will include a list of recommendations to Congress and the FCC to ensure rural areas are provided affordable high-speed broadband access.
