Mrs. Leona N. Buerkle, 85, of the Town of Cortlandville died peacefully surrounded by her family on Monday April 8, 2019 at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Syracuse, N.Y. Born December 28, 1933 in Passaic, New Jersey, Leona had been an area resident for many years.
Leona was formerly employed as a Tax Collector for the Towns of Hope and Roxbury, New Jersey and was also a sales clerk with Sears Roebuck Co. and a seamstress with Vesta Corset in McGraw.
She enjoyed many hobbies including, gardening, flower arranging, painting, sewing, knitting, crocheting, spinning wool, quilting, weaving and singing with the Sweet Adeline’s. Additionally, Leona was a great cook and an avid reader. Leona is fondly remembered by her family as being a loving wife and mother.
She is survived by her husband; Frank A. Buerkle, her children; Robert (Christine) of Cortlandville, Janet Powers of North Carolina and Dan (Cindy) of McGraw, a brother; Leo (Maryann) Nibbling of Brick, New Jersey, seven grandchildren; Tyson Buerkle, Katrina Powers, Laura Sobocinski, Alan Powers, Loretta Buerkle, Wyatt Buerkle, Wayne Buerkle, and two great grandchildren; Allana Powers and Ayla Sobocinski. Leona was preceded in death by her sister, Joan Mazzola.
Funeral services will be conducted on Friday at 4 p.m. in the Chapel of Riccardi Funeral Home, 69 N. Main St., Cortland, N.Y. The family will receive friends on Friday from 3-4 p.m.prior to services in the funeral home. Prayers of committal in McGraw Cemetery, will be held at a later date. A Celebration of Leona’s life will be held following the services at the home of her son Robert, 4056 Carr Hill Rd. Cortland, N.Y. 13045.
