One woman was killed and three others were airlifted to hospitals by helicopter after a high speed head-on car crash in Tompkins County yesterday April 4) afternoon.
The accident took place on Route 89 between Ithaca and Trumansburg.
Officials say three vehicles were involved. Trumansburg fire crews arrived on scene and found four people still inside their vehicles. It took crews 45 minutes to free the three people who were taken to Upstate Medical Center for treatment. A Seneca Falls woman died at the scene.
State Police say all of the victims who were transported to the hospital have serious injuries.
Investigators say a mini-van crossed into oncoming traffic, although the exact cause of the crash is still under investigation.
A large stretch of Route 89 was closed for about five hours because of the crash.
State Police say they could release the names of those involved at some point this morning.
