Deg Leppard Getting Excited For Rock Hall Induction

Music News

Joe Elliott is finally getting excited about Def Leppard’s Rock Hall induction later this month. After being passed over for 14 straight years, Elliot is totally embracing the fact that Leppard will be joining their heroes in the Hall. Blabbermouth transcribed a chat with WFSB’s local Better Connecticut TV show, in which Elliott admitted, “The closer we get to the date, the more exciting it gets. But I’ll be honest — it was nothing that was ever on our radar up until midway through last year when we started getting whispers that we may be nominated. Like, ‘Really? That’s odd.’ We never expected that.”

Elliott explained, “I think with us, the reason we really started getting excited about it is because just a few years ago, they introduced the fan vote. And the fan vote basically gave the fans one vote out of the thousand that you need, but it is the one vote that the other 999 can’t help but notice, because every day, they post who’s ahead and how many people have voted for whoever. So even if they don’t like you, they can’t help but keep noticing, ‘My god, that band are just flying.’ Sooner or later, people in that invisible committee are obviously probably going, ‘Okay, I get it. Yeah, we have to induct them.'”

Def Leppard credit its die-hard fanbase with doing the heavy lifting to get them inducted this year: “The fans have got us in there and they’re the only people that we have a long-standing relationship with anyway. So, for us, it was very important that we accepted that that is the best thing about this. The fan vote is really what drove everything on. And (we had the) biggest fan vote of all time, which is fantastic.”

We asked Joe Elliott if he was excited to connect with and watch Leppard’s fellow inductees perform at the induction: “Very much so. I’m ecstatic for Roxy Music — ‘can’t believe it took so long. You look at the rest of them, you’ve got the Cure, you’ve got Radiohead, who were slammin’ it earlier on in the year. That’s gonna be an interesting dynamic when they turn up. They’re two bands that we have absolutely nothing in common with, so, it’s going to be an interesting dynamic on the night, y’know?”

Def Leppard will next perform on March 29th at Brooklyn, New York’s Barclays Center at the 34th annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction. Joining Leppard in the 2019 class will be Stevie Nicks, the Zombies, Janet Jackson, the Cure, Radiohead, and Roxy Music. HBO will broadcast a truncated version of the ceremony later in the year.

Def Leppard are set to perform at Las Vegas’ Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino’s Zappos Theater on August 14th, 16th, 17th, 20th, 23rd, 24th, 29th, and 31st; and September 1st, 4th, 6th, and 7th.
