Cuomo Says Legalization In NYS May Come Later Than Expected

Local News

Gov. Cuomo now says the legalization of recreational marijuana for adults in New York State could take longer than he originally expected.

Legalization was included in Cuomo’s “First 100 Days” agenda, which he released at the end of last year outlining his goals for the first 100 days of the new legislative session.

Cuomo said yesterday (March 11) that he is still in support of legalization, but he’s not confident lawmakers will include it in the state budget because there are two many details yet to be worked out and agreed upon.

A final budget is due April 1. Rather than stall that deadline on an issue that doesn’t seem to be finding any common ground at the governmental level, Cuomo may elect to remove legaliztion from consideration on the budget.

Lawmakers could still take up legalization before they adjourn in June, but if not it’s unknown if legalization will even happen this year.
