Local News

A Cortland man was arrested yesterday (February 13) on charges of welfare fraud.

Cortland Sheriffs say 49-year-old Melvin Truell of Tompkins Street in Cortland failed to disclose information to Social Services between November and December of last year that netted him more than $600 he was not entitled to.

He’ll now appear in Cortland City Court on February 25.

A Cortland man was arrested around 8:45 last night on a warrant that was issued based upon his failure to properly register as a sex offender.

Cortland Police say 26-year-old Matthew Hewitt of South Avenue in Cortland ran from the police when they spotted him.

He was captured after a short foot chase on Union Street in the City of Cortland. In addition to two felony charges stemming from his failing to properly register as a sex offender, Hewitt was charged with resisting arrest.

He was held pending arraignment today.
